What is Lamb's Quarters

Lamb's quarters (Chenopodium album L.) is a plant belonging to the Chenopodiaceae (Spinach) family, usually reaching sizes of 150 to 200 cm. In Iğdır and its surroundings, it is called “salmanca”. In various regions of Turkey, it is known as Ak Kazayağı, Ak Pazı, and Sirken, and is an annual herbaceous plant defined as wild spinach.

Lamb's quarters, which grows in agricultural or non-agricultural areas and is consumed by humans and animals, is a weed. Recently, despite studies conducted to determine the nutritional values of some grass species in the pasture during their growth phase to meet the special needs of animals, research on the nutritional value of Lamb's quarters in natural pastures is limited. 

 

 

Benefits of Lamb's Quarters

Since lamb's quarters is healthier than spinach, it is preferred in every dish containing spinach. While spinach may leave an acrid taste in the mouth when roasted and consumed, such a taste experience is not encountered with lamb's quarters. Lamb's quarters is consumed quite widely by making dishes, salads, pickles, and tea. 

  • Sirken, which is a plant rich in iron and calcium, can be preferred in various dishes and pastries like spinach.
  • It is a food that individuals in every age group should consume in terms of vitamins A, B, and C.
  • As a herb with high fiber content, it regulates digestion and alleviates intestinal problems.
  • It has blood-purifying properties and eliminates inflammation in the blood.

Harms of Lamb's Quarters

It has been determined that during the flowering stage of lamb's quarters, it secretes high levels of oxalic acid by interacting with the soil. Lamb's quarters reduces the use of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in oat and corn fields, inhibiting the growth of plants by restricting their development. It affects the normal growth processes of plants by preventing germination, root development, and coleoptile growth in agricultural plants such as wheat, corn, and soy.

Lamb's Quarters Poisoning

In case of lamb's quarters poisoning, the most correct approach is to apply to a health institution immediately. Although no cases of lamb's quarters poisoning have been reported so far, poisoning or health problems may occur as a result of excessive consumption. Individuals with chronic diseases should be careful when consuming such plants. Because its feature of acting quickly in terms of vitamins may pose a risk for those with chronic ailments. Therefore, individuals experiencing chronic health problems should consult with a health professional before starting to consume such herbs. People with sensitive health conditions should use herbal supplements in moderation to prevent any negative effects.
