Smart Irrigation Systems in Banana Cultivation

Although banana is essentially a tropical climate plant, it can also be grown in subtropical climate conditions in some micro-climates. Turkey ranks 30th in world banana production with a production of around 500 thousand tons. In our country, banana cultivation is widely carried out in the Mediterranean Region, on the Mersin-Antalya coastline, in Anamur, Bozyazı, Alanya, and Gazipaşa, where micro-climate opportunities are more suitable and protected by the Taurus Mountains. Cultivation is carried out in the open in Alanya and Gazipaşa, and under cover in Anamur and Bozyazı.

Banana Cultivation in Greenhouse (Under Cover)

Under-cover agriculture, where the climate factors necessary for plant growth and development are controlled, is called a greenhouse. Since climate factors and functions necessary for plant growth and development, such as temperature, light, relative humidity, and air composition, are kept under control in greenhouses, it is the most used cultivation method in banana growing.

Water Requirement of Banana

In order to meet the water requirement of the plant, there should be an annual rainfall of 2500 mm and the rainfall should be distributed regularly over the months. There should be at least 100 mm of rain per month. In cases where rainfall is insufficient, irrigation is necessary to be equivalent to these values. Irrigation should be done in the form of drip irrigation.

Advantages of Smart Irrigation in Banana

  • Banana is a plant that can be grown both in open fields and under cover. Due to its sensitive and shallow root structure, its fertilization, irrigation, and maintenance are very important. The banana plant needs a high humidity rate. In cultivation, humidity should not fall below 60%. In greenhouse cultivation, the humidity rate is obtained artificially inside the greenhouse. Humidity sensors should be placed especially inside the greenhouse in order to measure and adjust the humidity rate.
  • Since it has a more shallow root system compared to many fruit trees, its ability to take water from the soil decreases when the amount of water in the soil falls to field capacity. It shows a physiological reaction very quickly to water deficiency in the soil. Excessive irrigation damages banana roots. It makes the soil barren and causes soil transport in some places. For all these reasons, banana orchards should be irrigated little by little but frequently to prevent them from suffering from water shortage. As much as possible, 3-4 irrigations should be done per week.
  • With smart irrigation, you can keep the humidity amount at the optimum level by adding many smart control sensors such as remotely controllable, smart, ultrasonic, and stepped humidity sensors, and you can provide predictive irrigation solutions according to meteorological data and rainfall status information.

The Smart Automation Solution We Implemented in a Customer's Banana Greenhouse

We offer automation systems to increase efficiency in greenhouses and support modern agricultural techniques. Here are the details of the system we applied to the 8.5-decare banana greenhouse of one of our customers, Mr. Kerim:

Mr. Kerim's greenhouse consists of 3 different sections and each is designed to be open to modern agricultural technologies. 5 valves, 3 pump stations, 8 window controls in the greenhouse, and the management of well and pool water levels can now be controlled remotely thanks to esular's smart automation system.

  • Automatic Ventilation System:
In the system we developed specifically for Mr. Kerim's greenhouse, we defined automatic ventilation tasks that operate depending on the temperature and humidity rate of the greenhouse. This system provides the most ideal environment for plants by keeping the temperature and humidity rate of the greenhouse at the optimum level. In addition, window control mechanisms have been made fully automatic with remote access.
  • Smart Irrigation System:
In order to meet the irrigation needs of banana plants at the right time and in the right amount, an automatic irrigation system was put into operation.
  • Centralized Management and Mobile Access:
Mr. Kerim can easily manage all operations in his greenhouse through a single platform with the system offered by esular. Thanks to our mobile application, he can control the irrigation and ventilation systems from anywhere and make necessary adjustments.

Thanks to this system, Mr. Kerim achieved energy and time savings while minimizing human errors. Since the temperature, humidity, and irrigation processes of the greenhouse are regulated fully automatically, the ideal growing environment for banana plants was provided. For more detailed information, you can take a look at our article.

As esular, we aim to offer maximum productivity and sustainability to producers by supporting modern agricultural techniques. If you also want to increase efficiency in your agricultural areas and benefit from the power of automation, contact us. Together, let's bring the agriculture of the future to life today! 🌱
