Increase in Forest Fires and Preventive Measures

The importance of the increase in forest fires and preventive measures is growing day by day. Today, increasing forest fires threaten the balance of nature. Due to climate change and human activities, fires have become more frequent and severe. To prevent these disasters, we must take more effective and comprehensive preventive measures. We must protect our natural heritage through steps such as the management of forest fires, early fire detection systems, and increasing public awareness.

The Impact of Global Warming

The impact of global climate change on the increase in forest fires is undeniable. Climate changes, along with the increase in average temperatures in the summer months, cause forests to dry out and become more prone to fires. Rising temperature causes the soil to dry and vegetation to ignite easily. This situation increases both the frequency of occurrence and the spread of forest fires. Therefore, the increase in average temperatures triggers the increase in forest fires and leads to an increase in the volume of affected areas.

Global warming increases the risk of forest fires by raising temperatures. Forests constitute one of the largest carbon reservoirs in the world and are also an important part of the carbon cycle. For this reason, forests are called “carbon sink areas” because they absorb and store excess carbon from the atmosphere. Forests, which are our natural sink areas, are being destroyed as a result of the increase in forest fires. This leads to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and even higher temperatures, creating a vicious cycle.

Global Situation with Examples & El Nino Effect

Extreme heat waves in regions around the Mediterranean, North America, and Asia are causing temperature records to be broken and an increase in forest fires. Forest fires can be natural events, but in recent years, their frequency and intensity have risen to unnatural levels. High temperatures reaching 50 degrees in the north of Africa triggered forest fires. Forest fires have also occurred recently in countries such as Algeria, Greece, Italy, Spain, Romania, Canada, and the USA.

Experts state that El Nino, a warming event that started in the Pacific Ocean in recent weeks and lasts for 1-2 years, could affect the planet and make global warming targets difficult. This situation could raise average temperatures even further and increase the risk of an increase in forest fires.

Carbon Emission and Solutions

The increase in forest fires leads to even higher temperatures by increasing carbon emissions. For this reason, Turkey and other countries are taking steps to take preventive measures for the increase in forest fires and to reduce the increase in forest fires. Burning trees worsen this problem by releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. To prevent forest fires, people must stay away from the inside and surroundings of forests.

High temperature and low humidity are among the factors that trigger forest fires. Correct and efficient use of water resources is important for preventing forest fires. It should not be forgotten that the water to be used before and after a fire is a limited resource. Misuse of water resources can accelerate climate change by reducing the amount of water. Accelerated climate change unfortunately has an accelerating effect on the increase in forest fires.

Preventive Measures

There are a series of effective preventive measures that can be implemented to deal with the increase in forest fires. Thanks to these measures, we can protect our forests:

  • Ensuring cleanliness by not throwing trash in the forest.
  • Not using materials such as cigarettes etc. inside the forest.
  • Avoiding burning stubble in agricultural areas.
  • Using low-voltage lighting systems.
  • Using machines carefully to prevent overheating.
  • Not keeping flammable materials around houses and gardens.
  • Planting fire-resistant tree species.
  • Cleaning garden areas and clearing dry grass.

Along with these measures, it is also very important to pay attention to situations that trigger climate change to prevent the increase in forest fires. Climate change can increase the frequency and severity of forest fires. Here are the steps that should be taken to pay attention to these situations:

  • Reducing Fossil Fuel Use: The use of fossil fuels causes greenhouse gases to accumulate in the atmosphere. This accelerates climate change. Switching to clean energy sources can lower greenhouse gas emissions by reducing the use of fossil fuels.
  • Sustainable Transportation and Mobility: Traffic and transport activities also increase carbon emissions. Turning to more sustainable transportation methods such as public transport and bicycle use helps in reducing carbon emissions.
  • Water And Energy Efficiency: Increasing energy efficiency by reducing water and energy consumption can lower fossil fuel use and therefore greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Protecting Forests and Sustainable Forestry: Protecting forests and practicing sustainable forestry can increase the carbon storage capacity of trees. Avoiding cutting and destructive activities protects the health of forests.
  • Soil Management and Agricultural Practices: Sustainable agricultural methods and soil management can increase soil carbon. This helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Protecting Natural Ecosystems: Natural ecosystems have carbon storage capacity. Protecting these areas can help ecosystems naturally absorb carbon.
  • Education and Awareness: It is important to educate and raise awareness in society about the effects of climate change. Encouraging people to make climate-friendly choices is an important step for change.
  • Policy and Legislative Regulations: Effective policies and legislative regulations in the fight against climate change can reduce carbon emissions and encourage sustainable living.

These situations that affect climate change can also trigger the increase in forest fires. Therefore, adopting sustainable and environmentally friendly approaches is important against both climate change and forest fires.
